Hannibal Regional is a regional leader and has provided exceptional patient service and healthcare to northeastern Missouri for 110 years.
Faced with an increasingly inefficient, undersized and outdated hospital, Hannibal Regional required significant renovations and updates to keep up with demands for growth and technological advancement. Insufficient clinic space, undersized operating rooms and restrictive nursing flows led to a poor experience for patients and caregivers alike.
Hoefer Welker used a data-driven design process to incorporate a long-term growth strategy with an in-place renovation. Over six years, the existing three-story medical office building transformed into a four-story, 88,000-square-foot outpatient facility connecting to the primary public hospital. A dedicated surgery discharge was also added to ensure surgery patients could exit without going through the main lobby. A phased expansion allows Hannibal Regional to introduce new services while maintaining a high level of patient care.
The transformation and expansion of Hannibal Regional added more than 137,000 sq. ft. of new construction and 30,000 sq. ft. of newly renovated space which creates a new public image that looks to the future of patient care. The surgery department became a spacious six-OR suite with a dedicated patient discharge for increased privacy and comfort. Pre- and post-operating rooms, central sterilization areas and the post-anesthesia care unit were enlarged to improve nursing efficiencies. Additionally, revitalized waiting and registration facilities and an expanded atrium cafe significantly enhance the patient experience. Ultimately, our design created a single outpatient destination for Hannibal’s entire campus.
