Hurlburt Field Clinic Modernization Certified LEED Silver

1st Special Operations Medical Group Hurlburt Field Clinic Modernization

The newly modernized and expanded Medical Clinic at Hurlburt Field was recently certified LEED Silver by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Hurlburt Field, an auxiliary field of Eglin Air Force Base in Mary Esther, Florida, is home to the 1st Special Operations Medical Group and Air Force Special Operations Command. The clinic’s primary mission is to provide deployment medicine and physical and mental readiness support for 15,000 Air Commandos as well as healthcare for families and base personnel.

The multi-faceted, $50 million, design-build project entailed extensive renovations to 80,000 square feet across three buildings as well as a 3,000-sq. ft. expansion to realign healthcare operations at the base. Building 91020, the central facility of the multi-unit medical and dental complex, achieved the LEED Silver designation for performance in energy, water, indoor environmental quality and durability. Collaboration with all technical disciplines from the outset of design through construction was a key factor in achieving the LEED rating.

“We have a great, long-lasting partnership with the U.S. Air Force and JE Dunn that is completely committed to providing superior healthcare facilities to our active-duty military service personnel and Veterans. This partnership has been ongoing for many years and we are honored to see that it continues to provide exceptional healthcare for our active-duty military and our Veterans.”

Healthcare services are provided across multiple buildings at Hurlburt, many of which were modernized, renovated and reconfigured to meet changing needs. These include:

  • Building 90311 is a former dormitory that was converted to a behavioral health clinic in 2015. This building was reconfigured to move behavioral health services to the second floor and renovate the first floor to accommodate the physical therapy program.
  • Building 91041, which housed the physical therapy space, was renovated to provide space for medical administration for TRICARE, a health care program for uniformed services members, retirees and their families
  • Building 91020 is the main medical treatment facility and was originally constructed in 1992 as an outpatient medical/dental clinic. Expanded multiple times to a two-story, 79,403-square-foot facility, it was modernized to meet current standards for department housed there, including dental, flight medicine, public health, optometry, command, pediatrics, pathology, and clinical labs. This building has been certified LEED Silver.
