Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a Level I trauma center and Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital, is in the midst of a significant expansion. Hoefer Welker’s Clinical Technology Solutions (CTS) team was engaged to manage the large-scale technology-related components of the new facility’s design to ensure optimal connectivity, interoperability, and integration with its existing IT framework and to align future investments with operational objectives.
Working with stakeholders and end-users across the enterprise, the CTS team documented the current state of the IT infrastructure and conducted future-state visioning. The team then worked alongside the architectural team to design all facets of the technology infrastructure for BIDMC’s new and existing facilities. Challenges associated with this design included consensus building across diverse end users, reconciliation with financial resources, and planning for technology and equipment innovation that doesn’t yet exist. In addition, the technology design had to maintain life safety for all, promote patient satisfaction and staff efficiency and retention, and cultivate an environment where technology can be integral to research.
