A Birmingham, Ala.-based construction company has broken ground on a clinic developed and designed by a team of Kansas City companies.
Hoar Construction’s health care division started work on the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center mental health clinic, which aims to serve around 25,000 veterans each year.
The $30 million, two-story clinic is the latest example of Kansas City-based developer US Federal Properties Co. and Leawood-based architecture firm Hoefer Welker working together.
The two companies, which have been partnering on leaseback properties for the federal government, have built at least 12 other clinics for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The 60,000-square-foot facility in Birmingham will allow all VA mental health services to be provided in one place, as well as offering new resource not currently available at the current VA hospital due to lack of space.
“This is an important project for the city of Birmingham, and it also holds special significance for our team,” said Mark Hendricks, vice president of Hoar Construction’s health care division. “We are extremely proud to build our first VA clinic in our ‘hometown.’ This clinic will provide new resources to thousands of veterans each year and will offer services that previously weren’t available. The mental health and well-being of those who have served us so bravely is a top priority, and we look forward to building a facility that is worthy of the commitment and sacrifice made by all our veterans.”
According to Hoar, the clinic is expected to open in fall 2021.
