509th Medical Group Medical Clinic Modernization

At Whiteman Air Force Base, home of the 509th Bomb Wing and the world’s only B-2 Spirit stealth bomber unit, the team recently completed a $28.5 million modernization of the base’s existing medical facility. The facility, originally built in 1979, remained operational and occupied during construction. As such, construction phasing and staging were essential components of this project’s success. The installation of a Temporary Phasing Facility (TPF) allowed departments to remain operational during construction.

Whiteman

This newly modernized environment features fully renovated clinical departments, including pharmacy, family medicine, pediatrics, flight medicine and radiology. The renovation included interior and exterior finish upgrades, installation of new medical, x-ray and physical therapy equipment, as well as security, life safety, accessibility and mechanical, electrical and communications improvements.

The renovated clinic was designed to provide high-quality healthcare for active-duty military personnel and their families. Patient care functions are consolidated and color-themed to create a sense of place, ease patient way-finding and facilitate efficient sharing of clinical resources and equipment. The design of the interior stems from the influence of the surrounding Midwestern landscape. Bountiful native foliage and seasonal color changes are incorporated into the overall interior design. The neutral color palette is accented with warm colors derived from the natural landscape, reflecting the colorful nature of the Missouri landscape.
