CHI Lakeside Orthopedic Center of Excellence

The state-of-the-art orthopedic and rehabilitation facility is designed to bring comprehensive outpatient care, advanced imaging, physical therapy, and clinical education together within a modern, patient-focused environment. In collaboration with McCarthy Building Companies, Hoefer Welker provided architecture, interior design, MEP engineering, and construction administration services for CommonSpirit Health. The approximately 50,000 square foot, $20 million Design-Build project transforms an existing facility into a highly specialized orthopedic center supporting a wide range of patients and clinical services. 

 The clinic features 48 orthopedic exam rooms, four X-ray rooms, and dedicated space for graduate medical education, supporting specialties including joint, shoulder, hand, foot and ankle, and sports medicine. A comprehensive physical therapy department complements the orthopedic services with nine additional exam rooms, a four-station occupational and hand therapy room, and a dedicated rehabilitation gymnasium. Administrative, staff, and support spaces are integrated throughout the facility to promote efficient workflows and seamless coordination between care teams. 

 

 The Hoefer Welker team maintained operations within an occupied facility while executing a complex, phased renovation. The physical therapy department remained operational on the first floor throughout construction, requiring the second-floor renovation to be completed first so staff and services could transition before subsequent phases began. This sequencing demanded close coordination among the design and construction teams to integrate new building systems, manage construction impacts, and maintain continuity of patient care with minimal disruption. 

 
The result is a modern orthopedic Center of Excellence that combines specialized clinical care, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, education, and operational support in a cohesive environment—while demonstrating the ability to successfully deliver complex healthcare renovations within an occupied facility, coordinate multidisciplinary systems, and balance clinical priorities with budget and construction constraints.
