Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville Emergency Department Renovation & Expansion

The Baptist Health Emergency Department expansion and renovation is designed to redefine patient care, family support, and staff efficiency through innovative interior design solutions. Spanning 183,000 square feet of new construction, this multi-phased endeavor includes a state-of-the-art 4-story tower, set to begin in 2025 and conclude by early 2030.

Central to this expansion is integrating the river ecology of the adjacent St. Johns River and the therapeutic healing effects of water. The interior design integrates biophilic elements inspired by water and nature, creating a calming and restorative environment for patients and their families. Access to natural daylight is a key principle, filling spaces with warm, uplifting illumination that promotes healing and reduces stress. The design also prioritizes staff efficiency by optimizing workflows, ensuring clear sightlines to patient rooms, and minimizing travel distances within the facility.

The expanded spaces include 63 new adult emergency exam rooms and, 37 pediatric exam rooms. The design also includes 12 behavioral health emergency rooms, enhanced imaging, and cardiac interventional areas were included to support growth. Future plans include 68 inpatient beds.

Despite the challenges of phased construction and integrating new elements into existing infrastructure, the project demonstrates a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics, and emotional well-being.
