The new Lee's Summit South Police Substation is a forward-thinking initiative designed to enhance public safety and community connection in the growing southern region of the city. Recognizing the need to provide more accessible police services and to ensure law enforcement keeps pace with the city's expansion, the City of Lee's Summit took a strategic approach by repurposing Fire Station No. 5 into a state-of-the-art police substation. This adaptive reuse of an existing facility illustrates the City's commitment to sustainability, resourcefulness, and proactive planning for future needs.
Hoefer Welker’s renovation transformed the former fire station into a fully equipped police substation, tailored to support modern policing requirements. Key updates include the addition of a fitness center, ensuring officers have a convenient space to maintain their physical health and readiness. A break room was incorporated to promote balance and downtime for officers during their shifts. The renovation also features open office spaces, fostering collaboration and improving work efficiencies among the staff.
Lockers were added to provide secure storage for personal and professional equipment, while a designated interview room ensures a private, professional setting for conducting sensitive interactions. Additionally, a spacious community room was included to host meetings, training sessions, and community engagement activities, helping to strengthen the bond between local law enforcement and the citizens they serve. The facility’s former apparatus bays were cleverly redesigned and enclosed to provide the large, open office space needed for expanding operational capabilities.
