Lawrence Police Headquarters - Hoefer Welker

Written by Hoefer Welker | September 03, 2019

Home to the University of Kansas, the City of Lawrence has steadily grown to nearly 100,000 residents. The Lawrence Police Department gradually expanded and took over spaces throughout the city to keep pace with this growth.

With no dedicated headquarters and departments being housed in six different locations, the Lawrence Police Department was running out of space. As a result, the city approved funds for a new police headquarters campus as part of the city’s 2019 capital improvement plan.

The department’s main priority was to unite all departments under one roof and encourage collaboration. Our team designed a single break room to act as a hub in the middle of the building. It also ensured direct sightlines by incorporating soundproof glass throughout the facility.

Security is always a concern when designing a project for law enforcement. The two-story building is built into the grade to provide two ground floors and a secure and public entrance. The public upper floor offers a glass entry and lobby as well as administration and sergeant offices. The lower level offers a secure entrance with work and briefing areas, locker rooms, laundry, etc.
