Jacksonville 1 VA Clinic

This facility provides ambulatory care, mental health services, cardiology, radiology, dental, and other specialty services. Its design demonstrates this capability, as it provides its patients with access to the best treatment available. The building is composed of affordable, professional, and permanent materials that convey an architectural character that represents innovative care.

Upon entering the facility, a two-story lobby with a switchback architectural stair takes visitors to a landing above that overlooks the entry. The stairs hug the exterior curtain wall, providing a dynamic experience and a hint of the interior environment as pedestrians approach the entry plaza. The main interior public circulation was centered on a spacious, welcoming promenade, which included a series of hotel-like welcome desks, comfortable and informal groupings of seating for waiting, and a two-story circulation path. The interior public spaces are flooded with natural light from the skylights above.

The facility incorporates a neutral palette, with color accents throughout the public circulation spine for interest and wayfinding to clinics. The interior design features a warm, non-institutional environment that balances healing with high-tech, code and criteria-driven features, supporting the delivery of effective 21st-century healthcare.

The site design achieved the goal of providing a more protected link for visitors from the parking area to the main entrance. The building’s radial geometry at the entrance welcomes pedestrians from the major intersections, parking areas, and primary vehicular approaches.

Pedestrian walkways create strong campus connections and reinforce the atrium axis for staff and patients. The strong entry wall, canopy, and atrium façade serve as a beacon to all passersby. The overall site design invites people, announces entries, and communicates the building’s engaging geometry while creating an open lawn and plaza.
