The University of Kansas Health System’s new 38,200-square-foot proton therapy treatment center is now accepting patients and fulfilling a need in what is considered a “proton desert.”
Designed by Leawood-based Hoefer Welker, The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s proton therapy treatment center provides patients from across the region with the highest level of proton therapy closer to home. The center is the only like it in the states of Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado and Arkansas.
“We’ve been in a proton desert in Kansas; no one should ever have to leave the state to receive the best cancer care available,” Dr. Terry Tsue, physician in chief and VP of clinical services for KU Health, said in a Tuesday release.
One of only 38 proton therapy centers in the country, construction was done in partnership with McCownGordon Construction and Fort Worth-based Linbeck. Canada-based Stantec partnered with Hoefer Welker on the facility design.
