THE UNIVERSITY OF Kansas Health System (TUKHS) in Kansas City, Kan., is an academic medical center known for advanced treatments and medical research, and education. As part of its commitment to leadership in healthcare, TUKHS expanded its radiation/ oncology cancer facility with a new proton therapy center in Kansas City.
Located at the University of Kansas Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, the new Proton Therapy Center serves approximately 224 adult and pediatric patients annually.
Due to the constraint of a small building site adjacent to the existing facility, the project required careful planning and a creative design approach. The project team, including design architect Hoefer Welker (Kansas City) and architect of record Stantec (Washington, D.C.), chose to design the new proton therapy center on the available land while creating an addition on top of an existing adjacent building.
